Personal Coaching: How Can it Propel Your Small Biz Success?
Thursday, October 23, 2008 –People tend to hear the word “coach” and think of it in the sports sense, such as a hockey coach or a basketball coach. However, in the last 5 to 10 years there has been a growing interest in personal coaching. That is, hiring someone to coach you in a specific area in order to achieve specific results. There are life coaches, weight coaches, business coaches, parenting coaches–the list goes on and on.
Personally, I have had two coaches so far in my life. One earlier this year to begin clarifying what I want out of a small business and one I just hired on a few weeks ago to coach me on making my long-held business, marketing and success goals a reality. Each of them has boosted me in their own way.
There are no hard and fast rules to coaching in the sense that you can hire one on for a year or a month, have one locally you see face to face or work with over the phone, or coach in a group format or one-on-one.
What they do is ask you the powerful questions, hold you accountable, provide clarity and know-how and speed up the learning curve. Unlike a therapist, coaches tend to spend less time on the analysis of why you may be facing blocks or dealing with negative patterns and more time on moving you forward, setting and achieving goals and taking your life or business to the next level.
Because of my own positive experience, I highly recommend my current coach Tom Volkar and wanted to let you know about a fantastic 5 day course I took with him earlier this month called Authentic Business Discovery. It is a small group program meant to help you identify the business you were meant to have. Or, if you already have a business, help you align more closely to what your vision truly is.
I got so much out of this course. The intensity and focus of the format allowed me to come out of it seeing so many issues which had previously been blind spots for me. Tom is extremely skilled in showing you how you may be getting in your own way and how to turn that self-sabotage around. I was so impressed with the course that I immediately signed on for 3 months of individual coaching with him. So far it has been truly life-changing.
You can read more of my testimonial on his testimonial page here. I also encourage you to subscribe to his blog, Delightful Work. Not only has Tom himself been a great find, but the community over there of other bloggers, commenters and like-minded self-employed folks is absolutely top-notch.
Whether you are just starting a business, thinking of starting one or have been in business for years, personal coaching can be a wonderful way to help break through the barriers to your success, take inspired action and gain the confidence you are looking for.

Hey Christine,
You forgot to mention the most important component of successful coaching. You! That’s right coaches couldn’t coach without determined individuals like you who have decided that it’s high time to make your move. As you know we can inspire you, encourage you and kick your butt to hold you accountable but the client does the work.
It’s an honor to be at your side guiding you forward. Id like to offer a no obligation call to any of your readers who would like to discuss there fit for next week’s class.

Christine, great review of coaching - and more specifically - of Tom’s program. Being in that session with you, I know exactly what you say about this course to be true - it is intense, it’s not necessarily easy - but in the end, you come out with such a better understanding of who “you” are and how to get where you desire to be!
Anyway, Christine - very nicely said!

Christine,
Well said. I have also had the pleasure of working with Tom. And, I plan to attend his upcoming lunchtime discussion - I’ll see you there! Seems that I can’t get enough of the good stuff he is able to draw out of me. I’m not always on top of my game, but with Tom’s help I certainly enjoy being in the game.
Best regards,
John

@Tom–Thanks Tom, glad you brought that point up. Yes, the client does do a lot of work–hard work!
It’s so worth it though. Working with a skilled coach puts you in a place I don’t think most people often ever go by themselves. A place of personal discovery and intense growth.

@Lance–Yes, it’s funny–some of the work we needed to do really brought up resistance in me because of how deep we were asked to dig. Sometimes it felt like it would be easier to throw the covers over my head and hide.
But in the end it was clear how important the things I learned about myself really were to my personal growth.

@John–nice hearing you on the call today with Tom and the others. I agree, that’s exactly what he does–draw stuff out of me that I never even knew was there. Powerful stuff, and so wonderful to find a coach with such skill.

I’m looking for a career coach too. I’m not quite ready. Still getting all my ducks in a row, but I’ve talked to Tom and I would hire him when the time is right.

@Karl–It is one of the best things I’ve done. When you are ready Tom would be a great choice.
I love your blog and subscribed a little while back. Keep doing what you are doing–there are a lot of us there who really resonate with it.

Hi Christine-
I completely agree with you on hiring a personal coach. I too hired Tom several months back, and it was one of the best investments I have made. It truly was a rewarding experience. He gave me the unconditional support I needed in achieving my desired goals. I am glad to be connected to this blog as I see we have a lot of the same interests. I look forward to reading your past articles as I am new here.

@Kristy–glad to have you stop by! It certainly seems as if you and I are kindred spirits. I love your post on your fave books for those feeling lost. I have read all 5 except for the Bolt book but will have to check it out. And how nice to see someone else who has read Ernie Zelinski–isn’t he great?

Hi,
I want to thank you for your blog. I have read many blogs on coaching and your article is dead on. As a coach myself, I get such great satisfaction watching as my clients grow spiritually and mentally and start making the right decisions in life and in business. I will definately spread the word about your blog.
